Helen Rees’ research centres on the south-western Chinese region of Yunnan, especially on its Dongjing ritual instrumental ensembles. Here she talks about the changes which have been brought about following the introduction of UNESCO-led programmes to preserve traditional culture, and the links which are being made between cultural and environmental preservation.
