A World in London 188 - Derek Gripper Thu, 2016-06-09 18:25

Skill to serenity through kora to guitar with Derek Gripper on this A World In London!

Musical maestro Derek Gripper achieves the seemingly impossible by translating compositions written for 21 string harp to the mere 6 strings of his trusty guitar. His new album, ?Libraries On Fire?, takes on a further challenge by featuring some classic kora duet pieces yet incredibly Derek replicates the beauty of these works on his solo instrument without overdubs or multi-tracking. Growing up in Cape Town surrounded by township and Creole sounds, it wasn?t a giant leap for classically trained Derek to forge musical taste buds ‘from Led Zeppelin to Khaled to carnatic violin’. His Who’s Who of inspirations includes most of the Malian korist & Griot greats like Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko, but even stretches across continents to Calcutta taking in the ragas of Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya. Fresh from his second collaboration with legendary John Williams at Kings Place last week we caught Derek on AWIL just before he tours in Wales. Perhaps his Welsh language skills need improvement but a definitive & delightful master-class in guitar is more than a fair swap. So Derek won?t be performing in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch but you can see him on stage at Wyeside, Builth Wells June 9th and at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan on June 10th!
