Episode 1: ?Phleng Kar? Traditional Wedding Music
The first episode of ?Exploring Cambodian Traditional Music? is about traditional wedding music. In this episode I will guide you through the articulated structure of Khmer wedding ceremony. It consists of a succession of rituals symbolizing different aspects of wedding such as fertility, magical blessing and eternal union; song texts express socio-cultural values related to the women?s duty, the position of the bride and the groom in the society and mythological episodes. In fact, each ritual corresponds to a specific song whose song text describes or prescribes the ritual scene. Music is broadcasted through loudspeaker so that the guests outside the bridal room, where is erected a pavilion, can follow the development of the ceremony. Therefore, phleng kar music plays a key role in Khmer traditional wedding ritual.
