AWIL 309 - Hanitra Fri, 2019-07-19 13:51

We were delighted to welcome Hanitra back to our show, just before her concert at Tuned In London.

This time she sang live in the studio accompanied by guitarist Jean-Marc Bontemps and the experience of being close-up & personal with her in song was magical. Over the two years since her debut UK tour, Hanitra has been writing new material for her next album and has much to say about the increase in poverty in La Reunion.

We often think of this tiny neighbour to Madagascar as some kind of island paradise, which of course it is in some respects, but the struggle for survival increases year on year due to climate change in the Indian Ocean region, and the legacy of colonialism.

Hanitra has always used her creative voice to speak out about global issues particularly those that affect women, so there are hidden depths to the beauty of her song writing and the complex rhythms she incorporates in her songs. For four decades she’s been a passionate advocate for change, equality, and humanity, and remains an absolute legend.

Hear her on this AWIL and find her current album – Songs From Madagascar – on ARC Music!

Also on this show, new global music from Slovenia, Zimbabwe, the Hopi tribe, and a tribute to Johnny Clegg.
