A World In London 209 - Koral Society! Wed, 2017-02-15 05:43

Packets of throat lozenges lay scattered around the table in the SOAS studio last Wednesday, lying in wait for any unplanned or spontaneous coughing fit. Two of the Koral Society, were unwell with colds, as was the show host, while the third band member had wisely stayed away to avoid any passing affliction. The trio in question, not in quarantine, aired their excellent debut album, ‘Waters Wide’, for the first time on British radio. Recorded at Tigersonic Studios, it boasts a collaboration between 3 band leaders, distinguished in their own fields of singer/songwritership, Jazz, and Afro traditional; Caroline Trettine, Alison Rayner, and Mosi Conde (he who stayed away); whose musical worlds collided in London just recently, opening up new paths for creative possibilities. Guinea Conakry meets Stokey, in waves of kora, guitar, and Rayner’s double bass, sealed with the kiss of straight talking, colloquial lyrics from Caroline Trettine, embellished with Mandinka & French whisperings from Conde. As three women croaked their way through this A World In London, the calm, clear, talented voices on Waters Wide shone through evermore brightly. Grab Koral Society’s album in May but get to one of the gigs tantalisingly previewing it across the UK this month, including the London date at Walthamstow Folk Club on Feb 19!
