It was such a huge honour to welcome Dhafer Youssef to AWIL this week. His twenty-five year career through ethno jazz & Sufi sounds has taken him all over the globe, performing, composing, and creating outstanding albums. During his childhood years by the sea in Teboula, Dhafer built his own oud out of bits of boat wood and bicycle cable, whilst making do with the loan of a real guitar just once per month. This is an artist then that doesn’t take his talent for granted and as you begin to comprehend his journey from Tunisia to Vienna & Paris, you realise that Dhafer is a man that was born to sing, to create, and to carve out his own undeniable destiny as a world-class music-maker. Dhafer’s limitless voice is unboundaried by octaves or convention and is matched only by his panoramic vision and meticulously heart-crafted compositions. In his mini-symphonies you can hear Dhafer’s voice reaching dizzying heights till it soars out of space into an other-worldly universe. Only the best musicians are skilled enough to melt into his ethereal arrangements wrapped around mellifluous poetry, which is why you’ll find guys like Elvind Aarset on electric guitar and trumpeter Nils-Petter Molvaer on his 2013 CD ‘Birds Requiem’. Dhafer has worked with so many illustrious names but perhaps the best is yet to come when the results of his recent collaboration with Indian tabla guru Zakir Hussain and Turkish clarinet maestro Hüsnü Şenlendirici will be revealed in 2017. Meanwhile a different new album is on its way sooner, set for release this September on Sony’s OKeh label. Make a note of the title, ‘Diwan of Beauty and Odd’ as it’s one that simply MUST be added to your record collection! More information: www.dhaferyoussef.com
