Stop Making Sense

Chris G aka Madera Verde brings his unique take on global music to SOAS RADIO in this weekly musical meander across genres and continents. Founder of London's Cargo music venue and many more over the last two decades, an ex director of The Big Chill Festival, Chris is currently promoting his very own 5 day dance party in Croatia (next one Thursday 2 - Monday 6 August 2012 … www.stopmakingsense.eu). Also somehow finding time to manage bands & promote venues and concerts in London... On the show, tons of exclusives and pre releases, live mixes & recordings, infrequent guests in the studio and the odd cantankerous rant.

YOU STAY BRASSY, MADERA

Its a bit of a horn-fest today on the STOP MAKING SENSE show. No real reason. Sometimes it just pans out that way... ok? Dont judge. As per the routine, MADERA drives a musical tent peg in one country, then gets a piece of musical string and connects it to another musical peg somewhere else in the world. Does that make sense? Music from the BEASTIE BOYS (MCA rip), BLOCKHEAD, CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD, THE APPLES, GREGORY ISAAC, HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND, LATIN KINGS & the BOBAN I MARKO MARKOVIC ORKESTAR get the party started. Yes!

STRUT YOUR FUNKY STUFF, MADERA

A very special edition of the SMS show featuring head honcho of Strut Records QUINTON SCOTT talking about his wonderful label, how it came to be and flourished. Dragging world music kicking and screaming onto the cool dancefloors of Europe since the late 90s with excellent club crew collaborations & compilations (SOUL 2 SOUL, HORSEMEAT DISCO, GOOD TIMES, SOFRITO) and now signing artists direct from Africa and beyond (EBO TAYLOR, FANGWANA), STRUT has never ceased to push the envelope. One of a handful of small UK labels keeping the faith, Strut we salute you!

HOME SPUN AND HAND KNITTED

MADERA meets podcast king, dj, and all round legend CRASH & BURN. They talk about growing up deep in the Amazon (in C & Bs case), a shared love of un-PC Exotica & obscure vinyl 45s, and why a Fela Kuti track can be a lifesaver during a long DJ set (in MADERA's case)...

DON'T MENTION THE "O" WORD
Like some malevolent Dickensian fog, a siege mentality is engulfing London. With only 100 days til the Oly***cs, public service announcements scream from the sides of busses and taxis at the panicking masses: go shopping at night, avoid all eye contact, stock up on batteries and fresh water, brace, brace. Enough already says MADERA, inviting like minded Londoners to radically change their usual travel patterns and come along to Croatia for the STOP MAKING SENSE FESTIVAL instead.

EPISODE 79: THE ONE WHERE MADERA PLAYS LIVE VERSIONS OF SONGS ON VINYL

...and also the one MADERA cant think of anything witty to write in the introduction.

FAKE LATINOS AND PROUD!

MADERA chews the cud with CHRIS READ , compiler of "Latin Concrete", a modern latin beat suite influenced by the DJ rather than by the Salsa dance teacher! Do you have to be Latin to make/appreciate Latin music? Lets have a heated debate!

QUE CALOR MADERA

Unseasonally hot weather in London always brings back early childhood memories of Tintin in "L'Etoile Mysterieuse", where a shooting star heads closer and closer to Earth causing it to swelter apocalyptically.... But maybe this sense of stiffling panic and impending doom can simply be attributed to the fact that the A/C is on the blink in the studio. In any case, the heat kind of goes well with the selection of ( mostly) Tropical bangers on offer today. So, its shirts off and heads down for another SMS episode of musical hotness...

THE STORY OF MADERA'S LIFE, CHAPTER 3, VOL 986

Spending most of your life running clubs ain't necessarily the most healthy lifestyle choice, but you do get to hear a lot of great dance music. Visiting djs from all over the world bring their sounds straight to your ears. Some of it  doesnt rub off. Some of it does. Like the selection below : freshness from Morocco, the Congo, Colombia, Canada, Cameroon, Brasil, Italy amongst others  + an ode to one of the greatest clubs of them all, The Roxy, NYC, circa 1984.
MO LAUDI, Le Pas Sage (Remix)
BADRE,  Morocoton

CARRY ON MADERA

Full of the Joy of Spring and with flaring nostrils, MADERA gallops through a selection of exuberant musical treats just for you. The odd saucy samba, breathless bossa, and frisky funk numbers slip in amongst the usual brand spanking new worldclash bits. Brazen yes. Kitch perhaps. Camp never...

THE MELLOTONES, What A Botheration (Pan Mix)

SMS 71

C'EST ÇA, MADERA, C'EST ÇA!

A delighted MADERA bounds into the studio today, flushed with excitement after interviewing AMADOU & MARIAM in French at a nearby hotel (...to be broadcast next week). He then proceeds to quiz MR BRETT from YAABA FUNK in English in the studio. Will next week's interview be conducted in Swahili in the Soas canteen? Tune in to find out...

THE CONFIDENCE OF IGNORANCE v THE TYRANNY OF CHOICE

FREEDOM IS AN AKA

Us music types like to hide behind acronyms, nicknames, aliases, nom de plumes or whatever you wanna call 'em. It gives us the freedom to reinvent ourselves when changing musical tack. No harm in that says MADERA VERDE aka BOIS VERT aka CHRISTO PACHANGA aka C*** although accusations of multiple personality syndrome could be hard to refute...Nevertheless, in the studio talking nuff sense about his new project AFRIQUOI, and a recent musical trip to Ethiopia, we have BOBBY GANDALF aka HAILE BADASSIE aka ANDRE MARMOT.

ANALOG OR DIGITAL?

Another bumper fest of dance music from shores far and wide. In the studio, AJ HOLMES, band leader, guitarist and club promoter talks about his latest soiree , PALM CITY SOCIAL. And MADERA gets misty eyed as usual with his dusty vinyl selection...

ALGORYTHM & BLUES

The game is up. " We know what you are up to, MADERA, We have detected a pattern in your show" said the eagle eared SOAS production team. "You start off all sweet & nice with worldy electronica and then BANG on the half hour you hit em hard with a bunch of dancefloor bombs. Then you drop a cheeky retro disco number at quarter to and then simply freewheel to the top of the hour with your random vinyl bits. Whats that all about hmm?" We've been rumbled, but in a good way...

Ah the wonders of live www broadcasting. Unconstrained by pesky time zones, the STOP MAKING SENSE show provides the perfect soundtrack for breakfast on the West Coast of the States while simultaneously lullaby-ing Snow Queens in Russia. And of course keeping London bubbling over afternoon tea and crumpets... Could radio friendly Time Lord MADERA VERDE be the new musical Dr Who?

SMS 63: PREPARATION IS EVERYTHING ...

This week, MADERA VERDE manages to trip himself up: no laptop + a bunch of unmarked cds + no planning. A bit like a rolling news presenter caught off the cuff by a natural disaster, he forges on regardless. Does he pull it off? You decide....
