Stop Making Sense

Madera Verde brings his unique take on global dance music to SOAS RADIO in this weekly live musical meander across genres and continents. A veteran of the London club scene, Madera is currently promoting his very own 4 day dance party in Croatia (next one August 2013 …www.stopmakingsense.eu). Also somehow finding time to manage bands & promote his new venue BEDROOM BAR in London... On the show, tons of exclusives and pre releases, live mixes & recordings, infrequent guests in the studio and the odd cantankerous rant.

ITS NICE TO SHARE, MADERA…

A lovely bunch of mp3s & wav files landed on the STOP MAKING SENSE virtual front door mat this week. And of course, it is MADERA VERDE's duty to pass on these delightful megabytes, suffused with refreshing licks of worldwide spice, to you, dear dear listeners...

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, MADERA

After a couple of mostly electronic shows packed with music made by robots and full of additives, its back to more standard issue, carbon offset, organic SOAS musical fare. No animals were harmed in the making of this programme.

MADERA GOES WAY OVER

Yes, we know the SMS show is only supposed to be just the one hour of fresh world/electronic/whatever action. But sometimes, you just have to go over… especially when it is a crime against music to fade out a 17 minute long Fela Kuti track…

MADERA'S AURAL WORKOUT

First, six in the mix, four to the floor, to get the blood pumping. Then a little latin stretch in the middle. And finally a leisurely junglist jog back to the changing rooms.

MADERA VERDE DIALS 118 118

Random telephone related thoughts for the day:
Why do we still say "dial"? Why let your fingers do the walking?
Like Ma Bell, MADERA got the ill communication.

...ITS COMPLICATED, MADERA

Intricate rhythms may be overwhelming at first, demanding attention like a petulant child, tugging puppy-like at your trousers with the odd semi playful nip o' the ankle...but in the long run, they are more rewarding, exceeding expectations and redlining satisfaction levels. If you don't believe us, have a listen to this…

ONLY FROM THE MIND OF MADERA

Its a tale of two musical halves today; 50% new, 50% vintage… but always 100% fresh!

VOULEZ VOUS CHAVEZ AVEC MOI CE SOIR,  MADERA?

Any politician who had his own daytime TV show where he sang and danced and called GW Bush a donkey is down with us here at SMS. In honour of the sadly departed Venezuelan revolutionary (a dying breed) MADERA plays some kerazee high octane latin music amongst the usual mix n blend. La Luta Continua!

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY, MADERA

In preparation for another mammoth 5hr dj set at Bedroom Bar on Fri 1 March (free entrance all night folks…), MADERA VERDE test runs some slabs of ethno-funk, digi-world, afro latino beats….

LET THE BON TEMPS ROULÉ, MADERA

Its a "better late than never" Mardi Gras affair on the show today, with a snapshot of NOLA sounds past & present. Why? Because we can. Voila!

SO FAR SO GOOD, MADERA

Big broad and heavy, a World Radio Day special featuring an interview with Rafe & Naomi from www.sofarsounds.com and some top world dance bangers. Yessss!

CASCADE THIS DOWN TO THE POD, MADERA, AND MAKE IT RAIN!

Confessed marketing buzz word muncher Madera presents another show full of baked in virability. Feel the traction!

SHORT SHORT LONG MADERA, SHORT SHORT LONG…

Technical difficulties permitting, its a near perfect blend of short and long songs this week. As usual, electronic mutations of world sounds collide with rockabilly roots, favela funk and backayard biz. Because we can!

Madera's Magic Mid January Blues Antidote

As this is allegedly the most depressing time of the year, MADERA decided to dig deep in his bag of phonic pharmaceuticals to make everything all right!

THE MANY MOODS OF MADERA

As the year draws to a close, we find a pensive MADERA at the controls, musing whilst fusing a mix of typically Worldish musical fare. No guests, just straight up tunage of the highest order...

THE FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT, MADERA HAS TO WEAR SHADES

Quite possibly the discovery of 2012, fresh faced and bushy tailed trio MORE LIKE TREES bounce into the studio to share with MADERA three slices of infectious live "strum n bass" . Toppin' and a tailin' proceedings, some excellent new crisp biscuits from HORSEMAN, DJ YODA, MOODYMANC, FANGA & CHINESE MAN. Stop it!

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED

So, live in the studio, film maker BEN LEWIS was due to chat about his recent TV series on WHAT BRITS LOVE (i.e. hats, cars, sandwiches, home ownership and humour, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ug_5RH99zY). But a sudden volte face meant that instead, the topic changed to his recent brilliant 60m film POOR US, AN ANIMATED HISTORY OF POVERTY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otSimrb5rcs). Today was BEN's birthday. He was feeling a bit down. But MADERA's musical selection cheered him up. Another satisfied STOP MAKING SENSE customer.

MADERA RIDES ALONE...

Still breathless from last week's live show with SON OF DAVE ... and breathless from just making it into the studio in time (damn you , London Transport), its a solo outing for MADERA VERDE. Completely swerving any Halloween references, its musical treats a plenty today. And the return of the Vinyl Solution feature at last… #like

MADERA GOT THE BLUES. BUT IN A GOOD WAY…

Its a BLUES special on the SMS show today… but not in the obvious, rocking chair on porch, drinking hooch wearing dungarees kind of way… no Siree Bob… Too obvious. In true MADERA style, its all about the twisted bastard child of Deep South scratchy vinyl samples and mega RAM computer manipulation. AND, live in the studio, SON OF DAVE brings his formidable racket, bringing blues kicking and howling into the 21st Century without thievery or pretension. Now, where did I put that there mojo…

BIG IN MADERA'S BOX

MADERA VERDE celebrates 2 years on air at SOAS RADIO with a retrospective of some of the musical highlights along the way. Picking approximately one tune per month of broadcasting, its a musical snapshot of what the SMS show is all about… heartfelt dance music from across the world with an irreverent electronic twist. Thanks for listening. You know who you are! MAJOR thanks to Carlos, Rob, Seth, Martijn, Drew, Charlotte, Violeta, Nathan, Russ, Cal, Koichi, Yvan, Ritu, Rita, KMT and all the SOAS RADIO family. Biggup yourself!

I GOT 99 PROBLEMS BUT BEING MADERA AINT ONE

'Oui!' On the auspicious eve of his centenary show, a 'debonair' MADERA is full of 'joie de vivre' for a change. Flitting 'nonchalantly' from 'genre' to 'genre' with 'panache' and 'aplomb', the show is nothing less than a 'buffet' of 'inverted' musical 'delicacies'. 'Å table'!

MUSIC SHOCK THERAPY

"Stuff happens, its a given… until the moment when we become involved and a different decision or action can change the outcome. Just saying". Discuss…
Anyways, in the studio, man like MOROKA talks about his Soweto / Notting Hill electronic dance music connections and plays some tracks blending SA & West London vibes. Alongside, a decidedly philosophical MADERA selects the platters that matter… MUNCHI, WRONGTOM, GASLAMP KILLER, ACID PAULI, TIM MAIA, ROMZIL, RITMO MACHINE, NORA DEAN & THE SKEE BROTHERS. Your time starts now.

THE SHOW THAT KEEPS ON GIVING…

Blam… another fine guest live in the studio this week. All the way from Brasil, INDEPENDECIA OU MARTE play three tracks just for us. Also the usual mixed bag of electronic global grooves, rare funk and cheeky edits from trusty MADERA...

SOMETHING SPECIAL JUST FOR YOU...

Once in a while, a band comes along that knocks MADERA's socks off. Brasilian export TIAO DUA did just that today, live in the studio, first time in London, playing a newly penned song with so much skill, and joie de vivre that the SOAS & SMS crew were left barefoot and stunned. Top and tailing that magical moment, current club sensation "Flowers" by ANDREW ASHONG, pure sex from LINDSTROM, Cuban dubstep joint from MALA, taco tack ℅ MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF SOUND, JSTAR rerub of Bucharest's finest MAHALA RAI BAND, HOLLY COOK & PRINCE FATTY versus THE ANDREWS SISTERS 'pon de version , a future blues banger by KID KOALA and kwaito king MOROKA (coming on the show Wed 3 October).

The first live STOP MAKING SENSE show of the new season for MADERA VERDE … and it feels good! Straight in with top notch guests KONKOMA in the studio talking about their fresh take on Ghanaian dance music and gracing us with a magical live version of a track off their release on Soundway Records. Also on the show, crisp biscuits from ACID PAULI, STAFF BENDA BILLI, NATIVE SUN and BLACKDOWN + some original girl power business from ASTRUD GILBERTO and BOBBIE GENTRY… and the cheekiest bootleg EVER from AZEALIA BANKS. Welcome along!

BACK TO SCHOOL WITH MADERA

This week, with Facebook peppered with photos of kids on their first primary school day taken emotionally by proud yet tearful mothers, MADERA is back back back, with an apple for the studio manager and a brand new satchel full of squeaky-clean new tunes. Its catch -up time, so no regular features til next week. Just the usual mix of ethno disco, karnival killers and mutated world music. Now pay attention, children…

SMS 93

A SHOW OF OLYMPIAN PROPORTIONS... THERE... WE SAID IT...

As the Olympic Brand Police patrol the corridors of SOAS, looking for infringements and illegal word associations (only Coca Cola, Mac Donalds and Visa are allowed to claim connections...), rebel broadcaster MADERA keeps calm and carries on, peppering his show with references to "gold", "silver" , "games" and other banned words. Will he make it to the end of the show before they break down the door to the studio and haul him away to force feed him junk food and make him pay for it using a credit card? Stay tuned comrades... (NOTE FROM SOAS RADIO MANAGEMENT: unfortunately, MADERA has been arrested for illegal brand association with the Olympics. Normal service will be resumed in September after he completes 30 days of forced labour , manning a security post at the Olympic Village )

ORIGINAL PIRATE MATERIAL, MADERA?

Finding suitable parlance for radio use can be a struggle sometime. "Inside, going in, we rolling, locked in", etc etc just wont do, it seems, for a show broadcast from an esteemed seat of learning such as SOAS. However, the mini vinyl mix of 90s house at the end of this week's show prompted exactly this type of language from the SMS faithful on Facebook. Maybe they were being sarcastic? Biggup yourself SMS massive....
