Movimientos

Movimientos showcases an alternative view of Latin American music and culture and explores the depths of the London/UK Latin and global music scene. DJ Cal Jader brings the tunes with an across the board selection from folkloric roots & global fusions to Urban Latin and cutting edge electronic, with regular special features and interviews with the artists, bands, performers, filmmakers & cultural protagonists at the forefront of a diverse scene.

Movimientos runs regular Latin American cultural events combining music with documentary films, performance art and poetry. It also programmes the Latin section of Global Local - a festival project that seeks to support and showcase new & exciting artists.

Pure Latino-Ska Reggae vibes on this episode as Cal Jader is joined by Abner Perez lead singer and songwriter of Ecuadorian-London band Reverso. They play tracks from and discuss the band's second album 'Radio Comfort' released earlier this year. Plus they talk about the Ecuadorian music scene and play influential bands for Reverso including Rocolo Bacalao and La Grupa plus the show features other tracks from La Kinky Beat, Ska Cubano, Panteon Roccoco and Sarazino.

Pure musical selection all the way through Cal Jader starts with a couple of Latin themed Beastie Boys track as tribute to MCA. Brazilian future boogie remixo Ray Lugo's I Dream of Bahia, Sao Paulo soul from Criolo and Curumin, Latin jazz with Energie Du Verre and Jessica Lauren Four, plenty of Cumbia and Chicha mash ups with Bondi Blaster, Dengue Dengue!, New producer Swaggadrozo's epic contribution to the Sonoro Norte EP, a killer from Quantic's Los Miticos Del Ritmo album and another track from the Chicha Libre album, plus a great uptempo ska track from the Reverso album.

This week Cal plays an exclusive acoustic track from Wara lead singer Juanita Euka, new Cumbia from Chicha Libre, Frente Cumbiero and DJ Negro, Brazilian music from Criolo, Os Magrelos and Maga Bo, more heavy Salsa from La Excelencia, a Colombian Hip Hop reworking of a track from the last Sergent Garcia album plus look out online for the new videos for tracks played here by conscious voices Bituaya and Ana Tijoux.

Plus he's are joined in the studio by documentary filmmaker Mikey Watts to talk about his latest film made for Al Jazeera's Power and the People series 'Undermining Justice' about corporate accountability - specifically in the northern region of Peru where communities have an ongoing battle with mining companies.

Movimientos: Mexican underground focus with DJ Chilango

Cal Jader is joined by Oscar Arroyo aka DJ Chilango, Mexicano en Londres, Cumbia and new wave Mexican music specialist who brings his knowledge of the Mexican underground music scene with some special cumbia edits and remixes and a few exclusives. Plus tunes from Outernational, La Mojarra Electrica and a great cover version of Fabulosos Cadillacs.

Cal Jader keeps it fresh with an eclectic mix of anything and everything Latin. Some London Havana connections, Merengue house, Salsa from New York, Latin Jazz, fresh sounds from Pernambuco, Brazil, Venezuelan Cumbia, Mex-Norteno-Cumbia and future Latin soul all in the mix plus a deep rumba salsa from the crates to start the show off.

Welcoming the London Lucumi Choir performing several tracks live in the studio ahead of their album launch at Rich Mix on 24th April. Plus we chat to choir director Daniela de Armas, who discusses her influences playing some classic Afro-Cuban influenced music.

 DJ Cal Jader runs down some tracks from the artists playing at this years La Linea festival London with brand new tracks from Brazilian artists Lucas Santtana, Curumin and Ceu, New music from London based artists Lokkhi Terra, Los Chinches, and The London Lucumi Choir. Russ Slater from Sounds in Colours returns to the Movimientos show joining Cal in the studio to discuss his recent trip to Colombia where he was exploring the music scene. Tracks played include some of the freshest new underground music from Colombia including Frente Cumbiero, Romerarayo, Herencia De Timibiqui and a remix from Lulucruza, plus some great Champeta tracks and beautiful pacific coast sounds.

Cal Jader chats to DJ Afroraizz Selektah from the community music and cultural project Tiuna El Fuerte in Caracas Venezuela. They discuss and play tracks from Bituaya one of the biggest acts to come out of this scene alongside some great new tracks from the Venezuelan underground scene Hip Hop, Funk, Cumbia, Afro-Venezuelan fusion, Joropo rock and Salsa

Cal Jader talks to Micheal Chanan - director of a new 3 part film on the protest movements in Chile "3 Short Films About Chile" who explains the background behind the films, the situation in Chile in general and the context of a highly privatised education system. Setting the scene with two hard hitting tracks by Chilean rapper Ana Tijoux, one featuring controversial Cuban rappers Los Aldeanos.

Cal Jader is joined by DJ/ producer, lmagenes label head honcho and one of the men behind Latin Disco outfit Los Charly's Orchestra Jorge Montiel for a chat about the new Los Charly's Latin edition EP. They play tracks from the new EP, some of Los Charly's recent hits, plus a few exclusives. Plus Cal drops unreleased tracks from Lokkhi Terra and from the new Quantic and Alice Russell album, a track from the Ray Lugo Boogaloo album out last year and more from Venezuelan's Bituaya featuring Los Van Van's Mayito Rivera.

Cal Jader welcomes Russ Slater from the Sounds and Colours website for a musical takeover with some gems from Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. An across the board selection with the psych-rock meets Afro-Colombian rhythms of Los Pirañas, Brazilian Afrobeat from Criolo and Bixiga 70, MPB from Passo Torto, a new track from the latest Fauna album on ZZK records, alongside some experimental folk, pop, electro and rock, plus a new track from the brilliant new Ana Tijoux album.

Cal Jader welcomes two very special guests in the studio. Firstly Ramsey Estevez from Cuban fusion band Remolino Kieto talks about the band and plays 2 acoustic tracks live. Also Phaxsi and Paloma from Warmi tell us about the concept of their all-female Latin American folk-roots group and also play 2 tracks live. Also featuring brand new tracks from Reverso, Mano De Dios and Lokkhi Terra.

To ease you into the new year Cal Jader presents a very chilled selection of some of the freshest new alternative Latin music. Tracks from Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, the US (east and west coast), the UK and Sweden! Amongst others there's an exclusive track from the brand new album from Afro-Peruvian crew Novalima. Experimental dub from Metis, conscious reggae, hip hop vibes from Bituaya, Fidel Nadal and the UK's own Zona Protesta. Psychedelic cumbia from Las Piranas and Daniel Fridell.

Movimientos - Tropicalista mix and best of 2012

Cal Jader presents a rundown of some of the hottest dance floor joints from this year with a special best of 2012 (tracks, gigs, labels etc) programme. Some shamelessly upfront hits from some of the biggest names in latin music Oscar De Leon, Juan Luis Guerra, Gloria Estefan and Gotan Project to plenty of underground tropical bass, Moombahton, Cumbia mash ups, Salsa and Timba plus big ups to consistently good independent labels like Electric Cowbell Records, Agogo Records, Bersas Discos and Urban World Records.

Nuevo Colombia part 1

Cal Jader blasts through a veritable treasure trove of new music from Colombia. Tons of new fusions mashing Afro Colombia rhythms, Champeta, Currualao and Cumbia with rock, funk, hip hop and jazz. Self proclaimed "Marimba De Chonto" from 13 piece La Reveulta, plus more pacific coast Marimba sounds feature on the radical voices and beats of Tumbacadre and our good friend Jota Ramos from Cauca (check out a previous Movimientos podcast for an interview with Jota).
