A Tall Order Episode 4 : Weaving the Threads of Livelihood
On show until the 17th of December, 2011, at the Brunei Gallery at SOAS is the exhibit "Weaving the Threads of Livelihood; the aesthetic and embodied knowledge of Berber weavers." In this episode of A Tall Order, the curator of the exhibit, Myriem Naji, speaks about her experiences living with the weavers, and some of the difficulties they face.
The Sirwa is situated at the junction of the High Atlas and the Anti Atlas mountain ranges in Morocco. The Berber weavers of this area are renowned for their wide range of textiles and their technical knowledge and artistry. Since the 1980s weaving production has intensified, this activity occupying most of the households in the region and constituting a major livelihood option complementing subsistence agriculture.
