A Global New Deal: Lessons from FDR's UN Projects

A talk given by Dr. Dan Plesch of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) at SOAS, held at Chatham House on June 15th 2009 and chaired by Dr. William Barnard of Democrats Abroad.

Franklin D Roosevelt's creation with Churchill of a 26 nation United Nations in January 1942 was at the time heralded as a landmark in international co-operation, but has since barely been noted in history. Dan Plesch discussed the relevance of this wartime alliance for the twenty first century debate on a 'Global New Deal' and outlined new research in Chatham House's archives which has vital lessons for contemporary politics.
