CISD

Established in 2000, the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) at SOAS is a research-driven unit committed to the promotion of excellence in scholarship and teaching. The Centre is committed to the development of applied international studies and to ensuring that its work impacts key international debates.

The CISD podcast series is a collection of lectures, debates and conversations exploring international affairs.

Issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to humanitarian intervention are discussed by a mix of prominent scholars, students and practitioners.

The series aims to capture the multi-disciplinary approach of the Centre as well as its advocacy of the some of the more non-conventional or marginalized issues in international affairs.

On Feb 21, 2012, Kerry Brown spoke about the power of street voices in China and how public opinion and social networks influence policy making in the Republic. Kerry Brown is a Research Associate of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, at SOAS. He is also Head of the Asia Programme at Chatham House, and leads the Europe China Research and Advice Network (ECRAN).

As part of the International Relations Speaker Series 2011/2012, Dr. Leslie Vinjamuri presented two speakers to talk on the subject of Israeli Counter-Terrorism: Dr. Daniel Byman from Georgetown University and the Brookings Insitute and Dr. Mark Fitzpatrick from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London.

Dr. Leslie Vinjamuri, Professor at the CISD and one of her students, Peter Barrett interviewed Daniel Byman on the topic of his new book as part of the International Relations Speaker Series 2011/2012.

Daniel Byman focuses on counterterrorism and Middle East security. He is also a professor at Georgetown University's Security Studies Program. He served as a staff member on the 9/11 Commission and worked for the U.S. government. His most recent book is A High Price: The Triumphs and Failures of Israeli Counterterrorism.

The current political environment in Pakistan and the role of legal fraternity

On the 6th of February 2012 the long serving human rights activist, Ms Asma Jahangir, talked on the current political situation of Pakistan and the role of the legal fraternity within Pakistan.

Biography:

Former President of Pakistan and retired General, Pervez Musharraf, visited SOAS to discuss, amongst other things, Pakistan, politics and the war on terror. The event was co-sponsored by the CISD and SOAS Pakistan Society and was chaired by renowned TV presenter Kamran Shahid, of SAMAA TV. The event addressed some of the most important topics of the last decade in International Relations and was followed by a Q&A.

On 18 January 2012 CISD, supported by the FCO, held a seminar at Lancaster House commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the declaration by United Nations of January 1942. The welcome address was given by Professor Patrick Salmon, Chief Historian for the FCO and Dr. Dan Plesch, Director of the CISD.

On 29 September 2011, Zihindula Mulegwa, President of the Centre for Political and Strategic Studies (Bukavu and Kinshasa) and former CISD student, gave a talk on "The Challenges of Building an Inclusive Political System in The DR Congo". The talk focussed on both the 2006 election and those scheduled for November 2011.

Following his talk on Diplomacy, Force and Responsibility to Protect, Professor Bruce Jentleson was interviewed by Professor Stephen Hopgood, Reader of International Relations at SOAS, about the key issues addressed in his lecture.

Following the roundtable discussion on secularism and religion, Dr. Stephen Hopgood, Reader of International Relations at SOAS, conducted an interview with the two guests from New York: Dr. Azza Karam from the UN Population Fund and Dr. Jonathan VanAntwerpen from New York's Social Science Research Council.

On October 20, 2011, a guest panel considered the ways in which sovereignty contend with competing claims to religious authority and human rights universals by drawing on the findings from two recently published books on religion and secularism: Rethinking Secularism and Religion and International Relations Theory. The panel consisted of Professor Jack Snyder of Columbia University, Dr. Jonathan VanAntwerpen of New York's Social Science Research Council, and Dr. Azza Karam of the United Nations Population Fund.

As part of the CISD Speaker Series, Professor Bruce Jentleson headlined a talk on Diplomacy, Force and R2P: Lessons from Libya and the Arab Spring. Jentleson is Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at Duke University and is also author of The End of Arrogance: America in the Global Competition for Idea.

Susan Butler spoke about her new book "Roosevelt and Stalin, Winning the War, Shaping the Peace". Butler is the author of ‘My Dear Mr. Stalin: The Complete Correspondence of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph V. Stalin’, the first publication that contains the complete correspondence between Roosevelt and Stalin. This collection of more than three hundred hot-war messages, never before fully available in any language, is an invaluable primary source for understanding the relationship that developed between these two great world leaders during a time of supreme world crisis.

Blankenomics is a new blog that features Doctor Stephanie Blankenburg and guests answering questions about the international economy. In this podcast, Dr. Blankenburg, accompanied by Dr. Dan Plesch, answers questions put forth by CISD students about the Eurozone crisis: its causes and possible solutions.

MP Rory Stewart discussed his new book, ‘Can Intervention Work’. As well being a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, and best-selling author of The Prince of the Marshes and The Places In Between, Rory Stewart has also been a deputy governor in Iraq, a diplomat in Montenegro and personal tutor to both Princes William and Harry.

Edward Benson is a Field Officer for UNHCR and Visiting Research Fellow for the Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford University Department of International Development. He spoke of ‘Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement’ based on four years working in Sri Lanka and dealing with natural disaster and conflict IDPs.
