Caipirinha Appreciation Society

The best in Brazilian music broadcast from Rio and London.

Brought to you from two continents, the Caipirinhia Appreciation Society (MdC Suingue and Kika Serra) cover the latest records from Brazil, revealing the scene behind the cliche and presenting a whole world of underexposed music. Brazilian journalist MdC Suingue (Portuguese for "Swing") has been living in London since 1998, where he created CAS to show that there is a lot more to Brazilian music than what the major record companies would have you believe. Kika Serra, who some years ago traded London back for Rio de Janeiro, joined CAS in 2006, when the show became a bi-national broadcast.

Caipirinha Appreciation Society presenters MdC Suingue and Kika Serra have birthdays only two weeks apart and usually celebrate them jointly. Should our dear listeners wish to give the pair of us a little birthday treat, here's a suggestion: tell your friends, family, teachers, colleagues, flatmates, neighbours about your favourite cliché-free Brazilian music show.

In this episode we welcome one more radio to the Caipirinha Appreciation Society's network: Rádio Mundo, from Floresta, a village from the state of Pernambuco. A partnership with the label Sambada.

Like everything in life the Caipirinha Appreciation Society show also appears to come in cycles. A couple of specific themed episodes are usually followed by a couple of random ones. Of course, the only constant being our selection of Brazilian music beyond the clichés, winter, spring, summer or fall.

The 23rd of April is Saint George's day, reveered in Brazil by Catholics and Afro-religion believers alike. The Caipirinha Appreciation Society show has already dedicated an entire episode to this story, but since it is that time of the year again, here are a few more songs influenced by the myth of the warrior saint.

The main ingredient of Caipirinhas is Cachaça, a very strong spirit that only recently began to be recognised as an exclusively Brazilian product, like champaigne is French and Whisky is Scottish. Deeply ingrained in Brazilian history, culture and way of life, cachaça went from being illegal to being a global hit, praised in literature and, of course, music.

We are getting ready to celebrate the CAS show number 300, so it has to be a special one. So special it will take another week to prepare. While you wait, we bring back a show originally aired in October 2008, a classic whose the cover art became one of our 24 fridge magnets available on order from caipirinhasociety@gmail.com

Get yours!

Alternative Brazilian music is becoming more and more popular among record collectors and brazilophiles. Tropicalia and Brazilian Psychodelia are quite well known outside Brazil these days. However, there are some hidden gems from the eighties that have been overlooked by most foreign Brazilian music lovers.

Hope never dies. The Caipirinha Appreciation Society joins the current of positive vibrations for a change in the axis of priorities in our cultural scenery. Empowering the real movers and shakers of our culture (the people) over the so called market forces is a guarantee that the flow of Brazilian music beyond the clichés will never stop reaching your speakers.

This show, differently from the normal ones, was totally made up as we went along, the only planned feature being Dimitri BR's new solo album. The result was a completely satisfactory beyond-the-cliché mix.

After the last two shows where we talked like parrots and were in carnival mood, this time around we bring you something a little different.

We also release some tracks from the latest Lucas Santtana album and play loads of 'Brazilian Music Beyond The Clichés'.

While the whole world focuses on the huge Carnival festivals in Rio, Salvador or Olinda, the Caipirinha Appreciation Society crew wanders in the opposite direction. We check out the carnival in the minuscule town of Monteiro Lobato SP (3,500 inhabitants) to find a very different vibe from the beaten carnival tracks.

It's Carnival time in Brazil and the Caipirinha Appreciation Society contrasts olden days festivities with the current street carnival in Rio.

In the last few months the Caipirinha Appreciation Society has experienced an exciting surge of new listeners around the world, who are happily embracing the cause of 'Brazilian music beyond the clichés'. This show is dedicated to them and to those of you who are helping us spread the word to your friends and networks.

Making the most of the elusive sunny days that were rarely seen in Rio this summer, the Caipirinha Appreciation Society brings you songs that celebrate the culture of worshiping the sun and the sea in Brazil. Put on some sun block and get ready for girls, bikinis and music*. *Beware: This episode contains traces of bossa nova...

Pitanga is a typical Brazilian fruit and this week we introduce you to a band called Pitanga em Pé de Amora, a samba band from the state of São Paulo. The show also brings new tracks by Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda, Mundo Livre S.A., Flávio Renegado and many others, besides revisiting tunes that were in our 2006 playlists.

A CAS show celebrating the the New Year with plenty of new releases and exclusive bootlegs straight out of Brazil. Recorded and produced in Rio de Janeiro by Mdc Suingue and Kika Serra.

NYE in Rio used to be a beautiful celebration of faith and hope with sons and daughters of Yemanja seeking guidance and blessings by the sea. But that was before corporations like Coca-Cola seized the party and relegated the followers of Afrikan Brazilian religions to the outskirts of the celebration.
This show is our homage to that entity, so beloved by our people.

CAS 288 This and That - Back to Rio, we explore the new solo album of one of the most important carioca composers, Pedro Luis. And also new traks by Dj Dolores, Duda (Moleques de Rua), Giba Nascimento & Fio Desemcapado and Eduardo Dusek.

CAS 287 Pernambuco 5 - More music, bootlegs and adventures from Recife.

This show is the second of the trilogy we made about Pernambuco in 2010.
Just to refresh your memory while we prepare the second episode of our most recent trip to this beautiful state of Brazil.
